Permits

Obtaining a Food Permit

Restaurants and caterers can now apply for a food facility permit electronically through our permit and inspection process:

Step 1: Request a Plan Review packet by emailing us at food@msdh.ms.gov.

Step 2: Complete the application and Plan Review, and email it to food@msdh.ms.gov, or to the address listed on the Plan Review. To expedite our review please ensure the following:

  • Put your facility name on the subject line of the email and on all the documents you submit.
  • Provide a complete application and plan review including:
    • Floor plan
    • Menu
    • Copy of the Food Manager's certificate

Please allow 48 hours for us to acknowledge receipt of your application.
Review of a completed application may take up to 30 days.

Step 3: You should receive an invoice from us via email once your application has been reviewed and approved.

Step 4: Click on the link in the email in order to pay the permit fee, or go to https://www.ms.gov/msdh/environmental/Food. Input the "Permit ID Number" exactly as it appears on your invoice. Permits must be paid for online before an inspection can take place.

Permit Payment

The Division of Food Protection now uses an online payment system and no longer accepts checks or cash in county offices.

There is a small processing fee associated with online payment.

Please process your payment online using the Permit ID Number on your invoice. If you have not received an invoice, call the Division of Food Protection at 601-576-7689.

Caterers

All requirements of the Food Code are applicable to catering operations. Also keep in mind that:

  • You cannot cater out of a home kitchen. You may be able to use a separate room in your home, with an outside entrance, for your catering operation. Check for any city ordinances that may be applicable.

  • Before opening a catering business, contact Plan Review Team at food@msdh.ms.gov for information.
